Midsouth Pollinators with Rita Venable

Join us on Zoom to hear from Rita Venable, author of Butterflies of Tennessee, speak about pollinators in our area.
About the Speaker: Rita Venable was an assistant biologist with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation conducting biological surveys in state parks and natural areas with the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory program. She has a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Science from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and has completed coursework at Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro in both Entomology and Magazine Writing and Editing.
Rita has published numerous articles and photographs in literary publications, newspapers, and magazines including American Butterflies, American Gardener, Backpacker, Discover the Outdoors, and National Wildlife Online. She has won Excellence In Craft awards in writing and photography from the Tennessee Outdoor Writers Association and Southeastern Outdoor Press Association in multiple years and was an artist-in-residence in creative writing with the Tennessee Arts Commission for five years.

Walk in the Woods

Come for a walk in the woods at Dugas Park in Scottsville! The trails have a range of surfaces and difficulty, and loops allow you to extend your route.
Please dress for the weather, and wear long pants, socks, and closed toe shoes to keep ticks and poison ivy at bay. Please bring your own water. We will be social distancing and wearing masks as appropriate.
Bring a picnic lunch if you wish or come early and bring a breakfast to enjoy outside.

SOKY Educational Exhibit at Cardinal Council Flower Show

Our chapter has been invited to provide an educational exhibit at the Cardinal Council's flower show
Exhibit 2: "Healing the Earth, One Yard at a Time" – Tips and techniques for landscaping with native plants in your own yard, thus making your land a haven for wildlife and contributing to the effort to create a Homegrown National Park. Presented by the Southern Kentucky Chapter of Wild Ones.
WHERE: L & N Depot Historic Railpark, 401 Kentucky Street in Bowling Green, KY 42101.
SETUP: June 14 from 9-11AM
PUBLIC WELCOME: June 15 from 1-6:00 pm.
TAKEDOWN: June 15 starting at 6.
RULES
Educational exhibits must instruct and promote the goals and objectives of National Garden Club.
Educational exhibits may be the work of more than one individual or organization unless a student judge or an accredited judge is seeking exhibiting credit for preparing an educational exhibit.
An exhibit must occupy a minimum of eighteen (18) square feet of surface area. Exhibits will be displayed on a 72” round table covered with black cloths provided by the show committee.
This competitive division is judged by the Educational Exhibits Scale of Points (HB p. 130) and below and is eligible for the NGC Education Award.
Exhibits should convey educational facts quickly and persuasively in an interesting manner.
Exhibits should be unique, dramatic, colorful easy-to-read and include feature/s that attract and hold viewer attention.
Handout materials add to educational value but are not required.
Each part of the exhibit should contribute to distinctive overall effect.
Plant material is not required, although it is encouraged where appropriate. No artificial plant material is permitted.

Evening Walk at Lost River's Prairie

We'll gather at the far end of the parking lot at 6:00. At 6:10, we'll start our walk along the greenway path (paved and level) to see the prairie in the evening. The trail closes at 7:30, so we'll need to be back at our cars by then.

We'll gather at the Visitor Center at 9:30 then see their Monarch Waystation. The arboretum has 153 types of native plants, including 17 endangered ones, plus a collection of conifers from around the globe and lovely landscaping. Wear comfortable shoes! See you then.

Tour a Pollinator Garden at a Girl Scout Camp

The Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana invite you to visit their two-acre pollinator garden at Houchens Program Center at 4520 Barren River Road in Bowling Green. (Highway 1435 off Veterans Memorial Road.) Look for balloons at the driveway and signs for parking.
Insect repellent/sunscreen/water are suggested.
Ginny Pfohl will be your host.
Please Note: Dogs are not permitted at the Girl Scout Camp.

Come and find what you need for your native-plant landscaping!
Everyone is encouraged to bring plants and seeds to sell and/or swap. Please label your plants. Botanical names are much appreciated.
The sale is open from 9-12. Set up time starts at 7AM. Restrooms will be available in the church's buildings.
