Topic: Question about invasive removal and native plant landscaping

Date: Mon 31 Mar 2025 at 10:12 PM

Hi! So I’m not sure if this is the right place to contact, I’m hoping perhaps you could at least point me in the right direction, we recently bought our home in bowling green, now that spring is hitting and everything is growing we are identifying all the plants. I’m realizing that almost everything is considered invasive. We’re working on prioritizing what needs to be removed first and then how to go about replacing it all with more native and healthy landscaping for our area. Is this by chance something soky wild ones may be able to have advice on as we go along and if not do you have any other local resources you’d recommend checking out?

I work for the City of Bowling Green Stormwater/ environmental compliance division – we have a citizen that doesn’t have the financial means to remove invasive bamboo encroaching on her property from her neighbor who also doesn’t have the financial (or physical) means to remove the bamboo. There is no animosity between the neighbors. The bamboo is causing Stormwater runoff issues around her home, possibly contributing to flooding concerns. She has reached out to the city for assistance or guidance. I know it’s a long shot BUT does your organization do invasive removal on private property or have any additional resources we could provide this citizen. I appreciate your time. 270-202-5070

Topic: Urgent – Help for Ukraine

Date: Sun 5 May 2024 at 3:44 AM

Dear Team at wildones.org

My name is Bea and I am a volunteer with United 27 Ukrainian Charity. I have found wildones.org on Facebook

I have tried contacting you via email listed on wildones.org but without any luck. I hope you do not mind me reaching out to you via your website.

As the full-scale war escalates, stand with Ukraine now! Please help those in urgent need of items for immediate emergency, medical supplies, first aid kits, transportation & critical services. We raise funds to provide immediate, direct support.
Please show your support for Ukraine by donating to our bitcoin wallet addresses. No donation is too small. All funds received will be used to buy humanitarian aid for the people of Ukraine. Unfortunately, we are currently not accepting bank payments as we are looking for a new banking partner.

You can purchase and send bitcoin to the above wallet address via https://changelly.com/buy or https://bitpay.com/buy-crypto/

I would be grateful if you could share this message with on social media, website and in-person.

I thank you for your support and making a difference.

In case you are not aware, here is the background to the Ukrainian crisis.

Millions of Ukrainians fell victim of the russian invasion and became hostages on their own land. The injured and wounded, orphaned children, the elderly, the internally displaced and the refugees urgently need your help!

The russian military is constantly attacking Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Droves of people have already fled Ukraine. Those who remain face an array of traumas from armed conflict to hobbled health care services to lack of heat, water, electricity, and food as well as mobile and internet communication problems.

Within our current appeal, we are raising funds to supply portable generators to Ukraine helping hospitals, orphanages, schools and shelters get through a bitterly cold winter when power fails and electricity turns off. This will compliment our initial appeal to secure donations to provide items for immediate emergency, medical supplies, first aid kits, transportation & critical services.

With your support we hope to raise £1,500,000 towards medical aid (e.g., the basic health kit is £440, covering 1000 people for 3 months; the pharmaceutical compliment pack is £2,200 and covers 10,000 people during 3 months; this can also supply the secondary level hospitals), tactical medicines and evacuation fund. We work closely with charities and NGOs in Ukraine, that deliver medical and humanitarian aid directly to those in need, including casualties and those helping them.

Help us cope with new humanitarian and medical aid challenges as a massive humanitarian crisis threatens millions of lives.

These are the new challenges, in addition to those, which Ukraine has already been facing since 2014: more than 14,000 people have been killed, a quarter of them were civilians, and as many as 30,000 have been wounded. Over 3.5 million people required humanitarian assistance and protection. About 1,584,000 residents of Crimea and Donbas were internally displaced persons after being compelled to leave their homes. More than 228,000 Ukrainian children became orphaned.

Kind regards

Topic: New book on native plants: Gardening for Moths

Date: Wed 5 Apr 2023 at 2:57 PM

Dear Wild Ones of Southern Kentucky,

Ohio University Press in Athens is announcing the publication of a new native plant/pollinator guidebook that I hope will be of interest to your members:

Gardening for Moths: A Regional Guide (https://www.ohioswallow.com/book/Gardening+for+Moths)
By Jim McCormac and Chelsea Gottfried
280 pages, 613 color photographs, 7 x 10-in.
$36.95 trade discount paperback
ISBN 9780821425206
Publication date: March 28, 2023

“We love our beautiful butterflies, but we could love our moths, too, if we fully appreciated their essential role in nature. Moths and their caterpillars transfer more energy from plants to other animals than any other herbivores. A landscape without moths is a landscape without birds and many other animals. In Gardening for Moths, Jim McCormac and Chelsea Gottfried tell us how to bring these wonderful creatures into our landscapes and into our lives.”—Doug Tallamy, author of Bringing Nature Home: How You Can Sustain Wildlife with Native Plants

In Gardening for Moths, Jim McCormac and Chelsea Gottfried emphasize the important role moths play in the ecosystem, both as pollinators and as a critical food source for birds and bats. The book—heavily illustrated with more than 600 color photos—encourages home gardeners to consider an array of native plants that attract moths. Because moths are mainly nocturnal, getting good photographs is a bit of challenge, so this book’s visual offering is a major selling point. The “region” of the subtitle is largely the Midwest, but specifically these states: IL, IN, KY, southern MI, OH, western NY, western PA, north and west WV, southeast WI.

ORDERING
Ask for Gardening for Moths at your local bookstore. Copies can also be purchased on our website shopping cart and from online retailers. Don’t hesitate to share the book information with your local library, too—thank you.
*If the UK Extension for Fayette County is interested in a discounted bulk purchase, feel free to let me know.

On behalf of the Diversity Committee at SKYCTC, I would like to invite you to participate with a table at the event to educate us about the membership, educational, and volunteer opportunities associated with Wild Ones and how we can help. Student clubs and organizations will also be hosting games and activities for participants.

The Spring Festival is in part a celebration of Earth Day, Arbor Day, diversity in cultures, and sustainably protecting life’s biodiversity (including us). This is a community outreach event to inform and provide the community with an opportunity to give back while creating awareness.

The schedule for the day would be as follows:

9 AM to 10 AM set-up
10 AM to 2 PM event (it’s okay if you cannot stay the whole time)
2 PM to 2:30 PM breakdown

Free tree giveaway by the Sustainability Committee: 10 AM to 2 PM

This event is scheduled to be held in our outdoor courtyard (“The Grove”) by Building L, where our Welcome Center is located. It is recommended that you bring sunscreen and wear weather-appropriate clothes for the day. In the event of rain, it will be held inside Building L.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Merrie Richardson

Topic: Kentucky Museum Interior Courtyard Garden

Date: Wed 8 Mar 2023 at 11:15 AM

Hey SOKY Wild Ones,
The Kentucky Museum has been re-imagining use of our interior courtyard space – which is open to the sky above and has green areas in it. Much of it is trees and some overgrowth / grass. While WKU does maintain the space (to a degree), we would like to “program” the space better – with a focus on native plants and making room for outdoor sculptures and continued use by the Kentucky Forge Council. I recently came across your Facebook page and noticed your work with Lost River Cave. Would you be interested in talking about the space and taking a look? I’d love to learn more about your work, especially with LRC, and some general advice on natural landscaping, how you’ve funded the LRC restorations, and see if we can collaborate more. The Kentucky Museum loves building local partnerships with our community and helping spread the word about projects like yours, so it’d be great to connect and see if there’s any opportunities for collaboration. Thanks!

Hello! My name is Laura Beth and I work with Warren County Public Library and am in the process of planning our Summer Reading program for 2023! Our theme this year is “Growing Readers” – and we hope to incorporate as many garden/farm/plant-based programming as possible for our community! Would you all have any interest in providing educational classes or interactive learning opportunities for children during this season? I would love to talk more about how we can help with your mission, too!

Feel free to reach out to me via phone or email!

Topic: Pesticide Use Health & Safety Guide!

Date: Wed 28 Sep 2022 at 12:45 PM

Hello Wild Ones,

Happy Wednesday!

I visited your page at https://soky.wildones.org/resources/ and see you have some great information; I’d like to ask if you’re open to including more?

My name is Taylor and I work at ConsumerNotice.org, a website dedicated to providing information about harmful products, environmental hazards, and preventing personal injuries.

As you may know, most pesticides can pose a risk to humans and animals. For this reason, we have published a guide with organic, homemade, and agricultural alternatives.

You can check out the guide here:
https://www.consumernotice.org/environmental/pesticides/roundup/alternatives/

Would you consider adding this link to your website to help us spread awareness?

If you have any feedback for me I’d appreciate it if you passed it my way!

Respectfully,
Taylor Oakes | Outreach Coordinator

Topic: April 26?

Hello!

I’m a new member of the Wild Ones in Lexington and tuned in when you hosted Doug Tallamy. I made a note that there’s another zoom meeting with the gardener that Doug features in some of his talks that has the small urban garden and I thought your chapter is hosting her on April 26. Is this correct? I’m very interested in hearing her ideas as I too have a small space.
